A candidate who wishes to obtain a Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetician or Nail Tech license must pass a theory and practical examination within two years of their initial application (see Candidate Information Bulletin for details). To qualify to take these examinations, a candidate must :
1. Complete the online application
2. Be at least 16 years of age
3. Have a 10th grade high school education or equivalent
4. Meet the following Area of Discipline (AOD) requirements
Aesthetician: 600 classroom hours or 1200 apprenticeship hours
Barber: 1500 classroom hours or 3000 apprenticeship hours
A candidate who wishes to obtain an Instructor license must pass a theory and practical examination within a year. To qualify to take these examinations, a candidate must:
1. Complete an online application
2. Be at least 16 years old.
3. Have a 12th grade education or equivalent
4. Have a current Delaware aesthetician, barber, cosmetology, electrology, or nail technician license
5. Meet the following Area of Discipline (AOD) requirements
Aesthetician Ins.: 500 classroom hours or 2 years experience as an active practicing aesthetician and 250 class hours in aesthetics instruction.
Barber Ins.: 500 classroom hours or 2 years experience as an active practicing barber and 250 class hours in instruction of barbering.
Cosmetology Ins.: 500 classroom hours or 2 years experience as an active practicing cosmetologist and 250 class hours in instruction of cosmetology.
Electrology Ins.: 500 classroom hours or 2 years experience as an active practicing aesthetician and 250 class hours in electrology instruction.
Nail Technician Ins.: 500 classroom hours or 2 years experience as an active practicing nail technician and 250 class hours in Nail Technology instruction
