REQUIREMENTS TO RENEW A LICENSE AS AN ENGINEER OR LAND SURVEYOR VIA RECIPROCITY

 

  • Complete the License Renewal application, answering all questions and providing all the documents required by said application.

  • Upload a 2 x 2 (passport type) recent, digital photo (not taken more than six months before) scanned in color with a dark background. Photos with a white background are not acceptable. 

  • Upload a copy of your Puerto Rico license as an Engineer or Land Surveyor.

  • Upload to the portal a digital copy of the Certificate of No Penal Record issued by the state of origin validated by the correponding agency and signed by the authorized representative. The certificate is valid for only 30 days. Please ensure that it is current at the time of the upload. If the applicant is a permanent resident in Puerto Rico, please click  HERE to request a copy. This document is valid for 30 days. 

  • Upload a current certificate of membership issued by the Engineers and Land Surveyors of Puerto Rico Association  CIAPR (COLEGIO). THE CARNET IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

  • Upload a  of having taken the required continuing education hours that correspond to your active certificate. It must be certified by the Department of Education and Professional Development, College of Engineers and Land Surveyors or Puerto Rico.

  • Upload a digital, recent copy of the Negative Outstanding Debt or Repayment Compliance Certificate from the local Child Support Administration in the applicant’s place, city, country, or state of residence. The certificate is effective for three months only. Please click HERE to request a new certificate.

  • Payment in the amount of one hundred and eighty dollars ($180.00)

  • License will be valid for a maximum of 5 years (Puerto Rico Residents)

  • License will be valid for a maximum of 1 year (NON Puerto Rico Residents)

NOTE

Regulations #6575 on Continued Education for Engineers and Surveyors approved on January 28, 2003, as amended by Regulations #7814 of February 23, 2010, in Article 4 provides the following (verbatim):

Section 4.03 Late Renewals - Professionals who apply for license renewals following the license expiration date must comply with the specific requirements for said renewal cycle as of the application date; and thus, a late fee will be imposed, pursuant to established penalties.

Section 4.04 Penalties for Incompliance - All professionals who fail to comply with their license renewal requirements established for said cycle must at least have completed 15 percent in additional credit hours.

The renewal cycles we are currently in (transitory clauses stipulated by Regulations # 7814) became effective starting on February 27, 2018 until February 26, 2023; and thus, applicants must submit proof of having taken at least 50 credit hours of continued education as a requirement for the Engineer in Training certificate or the PE license. Professionals who submit late renewal applications will have to comply not only with 50 credit hours but with 15 percent of additional credit hours as well. This adds up to a total of 58 credit hours.

 

 

NOTE:

Applications that are completed after the expiration date of the certificate or license that is being renewed will be considered late applications and will have to comply with the following:

 

 

A. Applications completed less than 90 days after the expiration date of the certificate or license will be accompanied by a letter explaining the circumstances that led to a late filing, and a payment in the amount of twenty five dollars. ($25.00)

B. Applications completed more than 90 days after the expiration date of the certificate or license will be accompanied by a sworn statement explaining the circumstances that led to a late filing, and a payment in the amount of fifty dollars. C. Applications completed more than one year after the expiration date of the certificate or license will be accompanied by a sworn statement explaining the circumstances that led to a late filing, and a payment in the amount of two hundred dollars. ($200.00)
